LEARNING PERL BY RANDAL L SCHWARTZ PDF

Shelves: science , non-fiction A lot better to read for a beginner than Programming Perl. Too bad the exercises were the weak point. Too often in the beginning it was unclear what exactly I should do, and that proved to be a major frustration. Sure, "TMTOWTDI" can you hear the sarcasm , but it was just depressing that after having tried to solve a problem in some way you found out that the "real" answer was doing it in a very different way.

Sure, "TMTOWTDI" can you hear the sarcasm , but it was just depressing that after having tried to solve a problem in some way you found out that the "real" answer was doing it in a very different way.

That was not helpful at all in trying to get my version working, and obviously there was no point in typing in the "real" answer and running that. I was working, I think reasonably, with the expectation that the exercises after each chapter would concentrate mostly on what was learned in that chapter — naturally building on other chapters too, but I thought it very unintuitive, for example, that the answer to the first exercise in Chapter 5 was simply to use an operator from Chapter 3, and in a very "advanced" way: a one-liner where a lot was just implied p.

This and many others was thrown in with the comment, "this is one way to do it". But was it one that a beginner is likely to try? Another example was, "Write a program that reads a series of words with one word per line until end-of-input, then prints a summary of how many times each word was seen.

That felt like cheating, because how could a hypothetical user know which words are in the database and which are allowed as inputs? I found the Intermediate Perl book by Schwartz more useful. Aug 16, Arthur rated it it was amazing Perl is so awesome, and powerful, even today. All the concepts are correct and it is overall very well poised for the future as a language.
