First-line medications for hypertension include thiazide-diuretics , calcium channel blockers , angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors ACE inhibitors , and angiotensin receptor blockers ARBs. However, a Cochrane review that included 13 trials found that the effects of beta-blockers are inferior to that of other antihypertensive medications in preventing cardiovascular disease.
